Common Sense
Quite often I hear the phrase “it’s just common sense” thrown about, often when someone misses something the one complaining thought should be obvious to anyone. Therein lies the problem, the person claiming common sense has made some vast assumptions about what experiences and knowledge they both have in common. While it may be accurate to place these assumptions on people with similar backgrounds to themselves, it cannot be fair nor reasonable to apply these to everyone. For example, for one person it might be obvious that people should eat when they are hungry because that is their body telling them they require food, but for others this sense of hunger may be skewed such that they are hungry much more often than they actually require food and so eating when they are hungry leads to weight gain. This also applies to experience gained through all the other senses where they are different or even completely absent.
There is no sense we all have in common; how can we have common sense?
